Although not a graphic design major, I’ve always loved using the computer to create art. I think Photoshop, as well as being a tool for making drawings and other things for me, can allow me to be a bit of a trickster. I can deceive people by altering images, making little hints, clues, and jokes in my work. There’s a bit of trickery in my work, and it will be fascinating to see who understands it. My second part of it being "renegade" for me comes from the fact that it’s a sculpture, and it has a slightly activist feel to it. I usually avoid both, believing that sculpture has never been one of my strong points. I’m also not “angry” or “passionate” about a lot of issues to make art about it. I’ll usually talk to others about it instead of using visual expression. But this time, I wanted to push myself to get out of that thinking habit.
With this work, I wanted that trickery present while bringing up the concept of the relationship between the economy/money, and the landscape/environment. I wanted it to be specific to the place, but also have a more general read to have it extend beyond the boundaries of my immediate area. I was inspired by the flux of landscaping that I see in my area. They'll dig up perfectly nice trees and fauna, demolish it, and then plant new things with no consideration of what the plant actually needs in its environment. They just want it to be aesthetically pleasing to visitors. I want to know what you all think. What do you think of with this piece? What do you think of the relationship between money and our environment?
